Dublin in SL
Religion in Cyber Space
For the first time ever Mater Dei Institute of Education in Dublin, Ireland, is delivering a course through Dublin Virtually Live in Second Life. This module, "Religion in Cyberspace", will be taught by School of Education Teaching Practice Coordinator and lecturer, Sabrina Fitzsimons, known in Second Life as Odysseus Tempest.

In-world classes will take place in Dublin Virtually Live at the Dublin Amphitheatre. Teaching methods for this module include: activity based learning, analogical engagement, roleplay, simulation, discussion and constructive controversy. The module will include virtual field trips to places of religious interest within SL such as Virtual Hajj, US Holocaust Museum, The Buddha Centre, Sistine Chapel, St. Catherine's Monastery and the Sistine Chapel at Vassar College.

Ms. Fitzsimons is a doctoral student at Dublin City University under the supervision of Dr. Margaret Farren (School of Education Studies). As you might guess, her thesis is "An exploration of teaching and learning in Second Life within the context of Initial Teacher Education". The research methodology employed is ethnography.
