Dublin in Second Life
Created by Ham Rambler aka John Mahon in partnership with Tourism Ireland, Dublin in Second Life was designed to promote Ireland to international tourists and was a key part of Tourism Irelands 2007 - 2008 marketing strategy. The Island was launched in October 2007 and provides an replica city with many features from real life Dublin included in the virtual space.
There are many shops and venues at virtual Dublin which provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about Dublin and Ireland's history and culture including:
- Trinity College, founded in 1652 by Elizabeth I, is the oldest university in Ireland
- St. Stephen's Green - a 27 acre park in the heart of Dublin city centre. It was originally open public ground until 1663
- the Shelbourne Hotel was named by its founder, Martin Burke, after William, second Earl of Shelbourne and has been an intrinsic part of Dublin's literacy, culinary and artistic tradition since 1824
- the River Liffey which winds its way through Dublin, before joining the Irish Sea in Dublin Bay.
- the O'Connell Bridge in central Dublin, which spans the River Liffey just north of
- Trinity College, was designed and built by James Gandon around 1794
- the Millennium Spire was commissioned as part of a redesigned O'Connell street layout in 1999
- the Ha'penny Bridge (officially Wellington Bridge after the "Iron Duke") which was opened in 1816.
- the Guinness Brewery, birthplace of the original Guinness beer. The original site was acquired by Arthur Guinness, who signed a 9,000 year lease in December 1759. There has been a brewery at St. James's Gate since one Giles Mee brewed his first in 1670.
- A memorial to the Great Hunger which can be seen in the north-east corner of St Stephen's Green in real life and in Second Life.
- Dalymount Park was originally common land with a large vegetable plot and known as Pisser Dignam's Field until it was taken over by Bohemian F.C.. It hosted its first game on September 7 1901, between Shelbourne F.C. and Bohemians
- Christ Church Cathedral which can be traced at its its present location back to around 1030
- Bewley's Coffee House, a Dublin Cafe Institution which dates back to in 1894
- Bank Of Ireland which was constructed by Edward Lovett Pearse and was constructed between 1728 and 1733 and originally housed the the House of Commons and the House of Lords, until it was bought by the Bank of Ireland.
